(18) Catrionae

She had ran as far as she could, before she fell on the sand of Tanaris , looking to the calm ocean for solace, but was given none. Glancing behind her at the small Port, she watched giant turtles laze about, hardly paying her presence mind. It was all so wrong---of everything that could be, that the Scions had done, this was too far, too much. Yet still she could feel and see the anticipation of the ritual miles and miles away from her fellow Scions, as they huddled about the Altar of Storms. The sacrifice was fiery of heart, the pristine white of her dress shifting in her struggles as she was pinned against the cold, obsidian slab.

It was her wedding day.

Annaliese's thoughts screamed out over the shadowy web of communication, but were ignored by all--she was not even there to take part. The shunning brewed together with her hatred of them all in this moment. Was nothing sacred?! Would children die too for nothing else but to appease the Voices in the Dark? Her thoughts went to Lucihelma then, the feelings of helplessness and guilt arising once again. In all her hesitancy, her denial, she already knew the answer. The answer was the reason she did not run to save the bride now, or why she had not the strength to stop the blade from plunging into Lucihelma's heart.

The Great Dark demanded complete devotion, else her own existence was better served as its sacrifice.

She had come too far to fall now…

Anticipation peaked as the blade cut into the bride's heart, and the Scions minds sighed within the dark repore, sharing their moaned exaltation in the sacrifice of her blood, her heart. Annaliese herself twitched upon the sand as this gift of death flowed through her, growing drunk with the transfer between her Sisters and Brothers. Yes, the soul's essence was intoxicating---how she could feel it coursing through her now, passed on through their minds. The warlock slumped upon the sand, staring up into the star-lit skies above, breathing slowed, so she might know more of this passing sacrifice. It felt good, addicting…this fleeting passion as the energy pulsed, strengthening the bonds of the Scions. It was everything….it was…was…

Wrong.

She curled into herself on the sand, listening to the sound of the waves crashing now. Anna closed her eyes, feeling the shore's waters flood around her body, soaking her through and through, as she came to the cold, cold realization.

Something inside of her enjoyed the sacrifice, and craved more.
